Positive 2025 for Ireland’s light commercial vehicle market

New light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations in 2025 saw an increase of seven per cent (32,779) compared to 2024 (30,669), according to the latest figures published by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

Meanwhile, new heavy goods vehicle (HGV) registrations decreased by 5.1 per cent (2,715) in comparison to 2024 (2,862), while new bus and coach sales also dropped in 2025 by 28.7 per cent (410) compared to the year before (576).

Ford finished 2025 as Ireland’s best-selling LCV brand, with 7,464 units registered and a market share of 22.77 per cent – both up from 2024.

Volkswagen (4,804), Renault (4,621), Toyota (3,422) and Citroen (2,205) made up the top-five leading LCV brands for 2025.

The Renault Trafic was the most sold light commercial in Ireland last year, with 2,374 units registered. This was marginally more than the Ford Transit Custom (2,346).

The SIMI stats for 2025 also tell us the sales type breakdown for LCVs. Almost half (48.85 per cent) of light commercial registrations came from “Business / Company” (16,013), with “Leasing / Contract Hire” in second with an 18.9 per cent market share (6,195). Private customer sales accounted for 12.59 per cent of 2025 registrations (4,127).

Almost 30,000 LCVs sold in Ireland last year were diesel, a market share of 91.27 per cent. Fully-electric LCV sales more than doubled in 2025 (2,016) compared to 2024 (934), holding a new market share of 6.15 per cent.

Less than one per cent (218) of all LCVs sold in Ireland last year were pure petrol models.

Manual remains the most popular transmission type with almost two-thirds of the market share, although automatic transmission sales grew by over 50 per cent (11,536) on 2024.

Elsewhere, 119 new ambulances entered service in 2025.
