Corteco offers advice on changing oil seals

Corteco, is urging mechanics and technicians to fit new oil seals, when changing timing belts and clutches.

The lifetime of a timing belt is known to be limited. Manufacturers therefore recommend to change the timing belt after roughly 37,000 – 74,000 miles or after 8 – 10 years if mileage is lower.

Fibres, elastomers and plastics are the basic constituents of a timing belt. Most of these materials are sensitive to the effects of weathering or temperature change and are thus subject to a degree of “ageing”.

If the shaft seals leak, the belt comes into contact with oil and its useful lifetime is reduced. As a result, the belt may rupture, causing damage to the engine. Therefore replacing these oil seals is crucial to ensure long lasting repairs.

When a clutch is replaced, the oil seals should also be exchanged. Replacing the seals minimises the risk of the new clutch being damaged after relatively short running time through leakage in these highly strained sealing areas.

With increasing mileage, clutch dust collects on these seals, heightening the risk of leakage. New seals prevent engine and transmission oil from escaping, something which would cause the clutch to fail.
CORTECO offers special sealing sets containing all needed oil seals are for a vehicle.
