121,850 new car registrations in 2023, EVs up 45pc

Total new car registrations for 2023 finished at 121,850, a 16 per cent rise on 2022 (105,398) and up four per cent on pre-pandemic 2019 (117,109), according to figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

A total of 22,789 new electric cars were registered in 2023, an increase on the 15,678 registrations seen in 2022 (+45.4%) and 3,444 in 2019 (+561.7%).

Imported used cars saw 50,716 registrations in 2023, an increase of 9.09 per cent on 2022 (46,490) and a decrease of 55.48 per cent on 2019 (113,926).

Market share for 2023 seen petrol account for 30.07 per cent, diesel 22.16 per cent, electric 18.7 per cent, hybrid 18.54 per cent and plug-in hybrid 8.28 per cent.

Petrol continues to remain the most popular engine type for 2023 (36,639), while electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid account for 45.5 per cent of the market.

Automatic transmissions now account for 64.54 per cent of the market share, while manual transmissions have declined by 5.01 per cent to 35.35 per cent of the market share.

Toyota ended the year as Ireland’s best selling car brand for the third year running, with 16,532 units sold and four models featuring in the top 10 best-sellers. The brand sold 3,164 more units than the next best-seller (Volkswagen), with a market leading share of 13.57 per cent. However, the Hyundai Tucson was the best selling car in Ireland in 2023 (5,238 sold).

Meanwhile, the hatchback continues to remain Ireland’s top selling car body type of 2023 (37,356). While grey retains the top selling colour title for the eight year running (45,362).

Elsewhere, new light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations in 2023 saw an increase of 25.1 per cent (29,403) compared to 2022 (23,510) and a 16.1 per cent increase on 2019 (25,336).

New heavy commercial vehicle (HGV) registrations enjoyed an increase of 20.4 per cent (2,655) in comparison to 2022 (2,205) and 19.9 per cent on 2019 (2,214).
