The Directive entered into force in 2024, and EU Member States must apply national implementing laws from 31 July 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">For automotive companies, the key implications are indirect but significant:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">Repair over replacement is becoming a central EU policy objective, supporting independent repair businesses and the circular economy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">Policymakers continue to emphasize availability of spare parts, transparent repair information, and extending product lifecycles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">The Directive reinforces the political momentum behind giving consumers and independent repairers greater access to repair services and information.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\"><b>Why the aftermarket is paying attention<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Trade associations such as the independent aftermarket are using the Directive as evidence that future legislation should also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">improve access to in-vehicle data,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">prevent software from unnecessarily restricting repairs,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">support remanufactured parts,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"western\">strengthen competition between franchised and independent workshops.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"western\">Many aftermarket suppliers see this as another step toward protecting the independent repair ecosystem as vehicles become increasingly software-defined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><b>SERMI \u2013 Implementation continues across Europe<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">SERMI (Security-Related Repair and Maintenance Information) is arguably the biggest operational regulatory change affecting independent workshops today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Its purpose is to allow independent repairers to access manufacturers&#8217;
