Used imports continue to rise, EV sales slump again – SIMI

Figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show that, while new car registrations for the year to date are down slightly, used imports are up over a quarter on the same period in 2023, which bodes well for the Irish aftermarket.

The figures also show that electric vehicle sales continue to slump, both for October 2024 and for the year to date. However, new LCV, HGV, and bus and coach registrations are all up for the year to date – another positive sign of a strong economy.

SIMI figures October 2024
New car registrations for the month of October were up 9.7 per cent (2,423) when compared to October 2023 (2,208), while registrations for the year to date are down 1.2 per cent (119,668) on the same period last year (121,134).

In October, 529 new electric cars were registered, which was 12.3 per cent lower than the 603 registrations in October 2023. So far this year, 16,656 new electric cars have been registered representing a 25.4 per cent decrease compared to the same period in 2023 when 22,329 electric cars were registered.

Light commercial vehicle (LCV) sales declined by 14.2 per cent (1,197) compared to October last year (1,395). For the year-to-date LCVs are up eight per cent (30,167).

HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are up 4.8 per cent (132) in comparison to October 2023 (126). For the year-to-date this segment is up 10.4 per cent (2,757).

New bus and coach sales are up 16.7 per cent (14) in comparison to October 2023 (12). For the year-to-date this segment is up 82.9 per cent (567).

Imported used cars have seen a 38.5 per cent (5,710) rise in October 2024, when compared to October 2023 (4,123). For the year to date imports are up 25.9 per cent (53,448) on 2023 (42,461).
