The timing chain kit market has been changing over the past 15 years. Growing market demand driven by chains fitted at OEM level has opened up a huge selling opportunity for the motor factor.
BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been fitting timing chains instead of belts for some time, but Vauxhall (Opel), Ford, Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota have also been following this trend; resulting in more than 8 million vehicles (25 per cent of total car parc) now using a chain to drive the engine.
BG Automotive, represented in Ireland by Top Part has identified this opportunity and offers the market three timing chain kit options:
Kit (K) – The light option
The Kit (K) alternative contains the relevant chain, tensioner and guides. This basic kit option is recommended for vehicles with mileage up to 40,000 miles.
Full Kit (FK) – The smart option
The Full Kit (FK) variable is the most popular option and is highly recommended by BG Automotive. Containing everything in the Kit (K) plus sprockets, this offering provides the garage with all the necessary components in the timing chain system. Selected Full Kits go further, also including timing cover gasket, oil seal, feed pipe and bolts. The Full Kit (FK) is recommended for vehicles with mileage over 40,000 miles.
Full Kit with VVT Sprocket(s) (VFK) – The comprehensive option
When an engine uses variable valve timing, a superior third option is available; Full Kit with VVT Sprocket(s) (VFK). This includes all components from the Full Kit (FK) plus any required VVT Sprocket(s). Launched during 2013, this all-inclusive option has seen strong growth since its inception. It is recommended that a VFK is used for vehicles with mileage over 60,000 miles.
BG Automotive’s range of 260 timing chain kits cover more than 3,000 applications; encompassing 3.5 million chain driven vehicles in the UK. Popular applications include Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat 500, Citroen C4 and Nissan Micra.
Product Manager, Tom Wilderspin, says “We have worked hard to develop our range to offer the marketplace a clear choice when changing a timing chain. Our FK option is easily our best seller, although our VFK is proving to be very popular and we believe this trend is set to continue. With this in mind, we are planning to launch another 40 kits during 2014 and the same number in 2015.”
Stringent quality processes ensure each component meets its individual requirements. Chains are hardness and tensile tested, and Tensioners are life tested using a purpose built machine developed by BG Automotive’s very own Technical Engineering Team. Each sprocket is examined using tried and tested processes, confirming hardness and material specification. A comprehensive warranty is also on offer from the UK based supplier, displaying confidence in their timing chain solutions.
The timing chain system should be inspected during each service and replaced if showing signs of wear. If the system fails, it can lead to destructive consequences and an expensive repair bill.
