Schaeffler warns garages not to fit SAC conversion kits

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd is warning garages not to fit a conversion kit to replace its LuK Self Adjusting Clutches (SACs).
SACs have been chosen by vehicle manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, for resolving the issue of pedal load changes during the lifetime of a diaphragm spring clutch.
The company says the SAC is the only system which is guaranteed to maintain the performance and drivability of the originally fitted parts and warns against the fitment of non-SAC alternatives.
Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd Technical Services Manager Malcolm Short said: “Fitting a non-SAC alternative may radically alter your vehicle’s gear change dynamics. It will no longer deliver the same comfort or drivability originally intended by the vehicle manufacturer that you will have become accustomed to.”
The LuK SAC:
- maintains original vehicle dynamics
- gives a 30 percent lighter pedal feel – for life!
- plus an increased service lifetime
- and the smooth drive you expect
The company asks ‘why save a few pence by choosing an SAC conversion kit?’ as they:
- are not to OE specification
- have a heavier pedal feel
- have a shorter service life
- decrease drivability
- and can cause possible wear and premature failure of associated products.
Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd has produced a new leaflet that set out the merits of the LuK SAC which works by compensating for the wear in the driven plate using a sensor spring and adjuster ring that controls the diaphragm spring geometry, thus maintaining a constant pedal load.
An additional benefit of the SAC design is a lower required pedal load, so rather than today’s high torque engines – and thus higher clamp loads – leading to a much ‘heavier’ operation, the SAC is able to keep the pedal feel light and responsive. Friction wear is also reduced whilst extending clutch lifetime.
Malcolm Short added: “More and more engine designers and vehicle manufacturers are incorporating self adjusting clutch (SAC) technology into their drivetrain systems to reap the benefits which they provide in terms of drivability and longevity.
“LuK produces millions of clutches a year as original equipment, and as the pioneer of the SAC system we can offer you a direct replacement for the originally fitted components and not a
re-engineered or alternative design.
“If you choose to replace your clutch with a non-LuK unit, you need to be aware that it will not include the same patented self-adjusting technology. Fitting an alternative design will
alter the gearchange dynamics, so it may not deliver the same comfort or usability you will have become accustomed to and was originally intended by the vehicle manufacturer.
“This could also lead to the wear, and possible premature failure, of associated hydraulic components which have been engineered for use solely with an original SAC system.”
