Owatrol for vintage rust protection

The scourge of rust is something every vintage car or tractor owner must cope with, and reliable solutions are few and far between.

One very different rust solution, already known and trusted by a growing number of car and tractor restoration enthusiasts, is available from Owatrol, according to Irish Owatrol distributor Igoe International Ltd.

As well as being a highly-effective rust preventative, Owatrol oil can also be added to any oil-based paint to improve its finish and also add its rust-beating qualities. Available in Aerosol, 500ml, 1L, 5L & 20L.

There are two solutions available, each with their own special purpose. For heavy rust (hidden or visible), apply Owatrol Oil – a highly-penetrating drying oil directly with brush or spray.

Brendan Igoe of Igoe International Ltd., told Factorfocus.ie that Owatrol oil penetrates all the way into the good steel at the back, and expels all traces of oxygen and moisture (the rust food) and takes their place. The oil dries to form a flexible, clear membrane, thereby preventing their return.

Igoe added that this “stops the rust in its tracks, and allows you to prime and paint without any re-appearance of rust for a very long time”.

If you wish to use an oil-based paint or primer, for example in underbody or hidden areas, Igoe said that you may overcoat the Owatrol with any oil-based paint or primer. This works great with Owatrol oil added.

Another alternative is to apply another coat or two using Owatrol Deco Black. Should you wish to finish ‘visible areas’ with two-part or cellulose-based paints etc, you can use another Owatrol primer called CIP, red colour, which acts as a barrier between Owatrol oil and the paint to avoid a reaction.

For less severe rust, Igoe said you can apply Owatrol CIP direct. First, allow it to dry, then fill or topcoat for a long-lasting rust-free result.

According to Igoe, another scenario where Owatrol is coming to the aid of motorists is the ongoing fail results by NCT testers, due to the presence of rust and corrosion.

For enthusiasts who’d like to retain a rusted patina on classic or vintage cars and tractors, but would also like to protect them from further deterioration, Owatrol oil is said to be ideal.

This surface-rusted 1948 Marshall tractor looks fantastic having been rubbed down and painted with Owatrol Oil, which protects the steel while retaining the rusted appearance.

The Marshall tractor pictured above, was purchased in Wales by Longford man Paddy Egan, a member of the Lanz Bulldog Club of Ireland, who said: “The tractor was in a shed beside the sea for eight years as a non-runner. The salt from the sea had a big effect on the bodywork. I gave it a light rub down and sprayed some Owatrol oil on it and the oil transformed the tractor.”

Owatrol products are available at leading motor factors and some paint stores, or online at www.igoe.ie.

Igoe International Ltd. will also be exhibiting at Auto Trade EXPO 2024 (stand L-23), which takes place at the RDS in Dublin fro, 12th-13th October.
