The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust emissions back into the intake manifold. These gases mix with the intake air and actually cool the combustion process. These are referred to as NOX emissions, and are a common cause for failing NCT emissions testing.

Failure to repair or replace the EGR valve will not lead to a life threatening condition, although it will reduce the life of the car and increase exhaust emissions.
